STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) — The new building security systems in Stevens Point public schools are ready for testing. The first three schools to activate the system are Ben Franklin Junior High, Bannach Elementary, and Stevens Point Area Senior High school. The system features a video intercom box at the main entrance, where visitors will have to buzz the office to gain entry to the school.
Security Coordinator Steven Prokop told WAOW television security at schools has been evaluated nationwide after tragic shooting incidents like Sandy Hook. n Prokop says the buildings have also had several windows reinforced to prevent unwanted entry.
Administration team members also have a pendant that allows them to notify all area police officers on duty at the push of a button, without relaying the message through the dispatch center.
The security enhancements were approved last April at a cost of just under $400,000 for all district buildings. School officials will test the systems for the rest of this school year starting April 7th, and then activate the system in all buildings next fall.
The Access System is already being used successfully at Pacelli and the other Stevens Point area Catholic schools.
