We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
The 2nd album of the year from the LA based funk group War, “All Day Music” was a break-through disc for the band after their break with Eric Burdon. The group started to not only find their funk groove but also a nice mellow vibe on a number of the tunes.
The LP also yielded a couple of hits in the slinky title track and the tune “Slippin Into Darkness” which was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 22 weeks in late 71-early 72.
But there are other pleasures on the record as well. “Get Down” and the unfortunately named “Nappy Head” bring the funk and the slower tunes like “That’s What Love Will Do” (which features some great sax from Charles Miller) and “There Must Be A Reason” (nice harmonies) , show that slow doesn’t mean “not funky”.
They also include a live cut “Baby Brother” from a June 1971 concert at the Hollywood Bowl. It’s a jam baby! The song would also show up in different form as “Me & Baby Brother” on their “Deliver The Word ” LP.
Howard Scott on guitar, BB Dickerson on bass, Lonnie Jordan on keyboards, Harold Brown on drums, Papa Dee Allen on congas, bongos and percussion, Charles Miller on flute & sax and Lee Oskar on harmonica. And they all sing!
This band is percolating…and showing some of the chops that would manifest in a bunch of hit records and albums through the 1970’s. Enjoy!
