MADISON, Wis (WSAU) — With the new deer hunting season, DNR Secretary Cathy O’Donnell Stepp says there are also some recent changes and options for some long-standing rules and regulations, which can be found at dnr.wi.gov/topic/hunt/deer.html and www.gowild.wi.gov
Among those changes, actual back-tags are no longer required. “Some of the latest changes for deer hunters that they should know about this year is the elimination of the back-tag requirement, which is pretty popular. The legislature just passed that change this last session,” Stepp said.
And there’s also changes to carcass tagging. “Carcass tag rules now are a little bit different,” she said. “The rule now is if you leave it, tag it. But you don’t have to actually put the tag on the animal right away. As long as you’re right with the carcass you don’t have to worry about tagging it, but if you’re moving away from it, then you have to make sure you tag it.”
Once you’ve bagged your deer you can register your kill online, or you can still do it the old-fashioned way at a registration station, which Stepp says is still a popular option due to the camaraderie and tradition that’s involved.
