MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — Marshfield resident Ken Bargender has announced his intentions to run for the city’s vacant Mayor position.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Bargender said “I have served the citizens of Marshfield in many capacities over the past 14 years. I feel it is time to use my experience and knowledge to fulfill the roll [sic] of Mayor.”
His campaign slogan will be “together we can make Marshfield better.”
Marshfield has been without a Mayor for much of 2021 after Bob McManus was removed from office for deleting text messages from his city-issued cell phone that were part of public record. He was removed following a multi-day hearing which mimicked a jury trial during which City Council Alders were sworn in to act as a jury. The final vote to remove McManus was 8-2.
City leaders decided to leave the position vacant until the next city election instead of holding a special election. City Administrator Steve Barg has been handling many of the day-to-day operations at City Hall, and City Council President Nick Poeschel has handled duties such as signing official documents and running City Council meetings.
December 1st marks the first day that candidates for local, non-partisan offices can begin circulating their nominating petitions. The spring general election is April 5th, any primaries that are needed will be held in February.
