WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau City Council has unanimously approved Gorman and Company’s proposal for apartment housing at the current West Side Battery and L&S Printing site.
The Madison-area developer won the rights to redevelop the site in late November over a proposal from Wausau Opportunity Zone which called for the site to be left vacant as part of their redevelopment of the Wausau Center Mall site. Members of the city’s economic development committee noted that while the parcel may be small for a multi-story apartment building, it does fill a need for affordable housing within the community.

Tuesday’s vote was part of a special city council meeting and allows Gorman and Company to beat the deadline to apply for certain tax credits. Their current plan calls for planning and prep work to be conducted over the next year with groundbreaking in 2023. The units would be ready for occupancy by the summer of 2024.
Gorman and Company is also in the process of renovating the Landmark Apartment building just across the river from the West Side Battery site.
Also on Tuesday, the city’s Economic Development Committee approved a planning option agreement with Gorman and Company for the site. City Attorney Anne Jacobson says that allows them time to perform their due diligence on the site before taking over the property and breaking ground.
Jacobson called the agreement a standard operating procedure.
