PHILLIPS, Wis. (WSAU) — Fire destroyed a garage that was used to store several specialized trucks and tools for a utility company.
The fire was at the Phillips, Wisconsin Xcel Energy shop.
A passing motorist on Highway 13 spotted the fire at about 4:30 a.m. Friday. When fire crews arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames.
Eleven utility trucks, including bucket trucks and specialized diggers for putting up utility poles were destroyed. Some of those trucks will cost over $250,000 each to replace. The loss of the vehicles plus the building will put the damage estimates into the millions of dollars.
Investigators do not yet know what caused the fire, but confirm fire spread quickly once the truck fuel, tires, and hydraulic fluids started to burn.
