MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — For the fourth time in as many days, Wisconsin broke its record for single-day COVID-19 cases amid the spread of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.
The state Department of Health Services reported 12,293 new cases on Thursday. It was the first time the state had ever confirmed more than 12,000 cases in a single day.
The seven-day average increased to a record 7,367.
With 12 deaths reported Thursday, the seven-day average decreased to 21.
Since the pandemic began, Wisconsin has reported 1,048,267 confirmed cases and 10,271 deaths.
As of Friday, 62.3% of state residents had received at least one dose of vaccine, while 58.3% had completed the vaccine series.
Hospitalizations increased on Friday. The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported treating 2,109 COVID-19 patients, 49 more than on Thursday and 399 more than a week earlier. Of those, 472 were in intensive care, three fewer than on Thursday but 76 more than a week earlier.
