We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
San Francisco was certainly a fertile ground for all kinds of music in the late 60’s and early 70’s. One of the bands that debuted in 1972 was Malo. They were fronted by Arcelio Garcia Jr, Richard Bean and Abel Zarate and featured Carlos Santana’s brother Jorge on guitar.
The band was heavy on percussion and featured an impressive horn section led by Luis Gasca on trumpet and Roy Murray on trombone flute and sax.
The group trod alot of the same ground as Santana but never really broke through due to an ever changing lineup. This album did produce a T0p 20 single which you may remember….
Sugar Ray even sampled the tune in their 1999 hit “Every Morning”. Mark McGrath said as a kid growing up in Northern California the song was a “low-rider anthem” and they heard it alot….
This album has some exciting stuff…”Pana” and “Peace” stand out for me. If you like Santana, you’ll dig this.
