WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – On Friday in Wausau, community members protested Gerrymandering in the Badger state.
With a decision expected soon on the state’s redistricting, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) organized the gathering. The groups said they want to spotlight lawmakers unjustly drawing maps that benefit their own party, known as gerrymandering.
Friday’s protestors encouraged lawmakers to keep the process fair and ensure voters’ voices are heard. “It’s important because we want every legally registered voter’s vote to be counted. It’s unconstitutional to not include them in our voting,” said Lucy Harvey, President of the Wausau Chapter of American Association of University Women.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court heard arguments on Wednesday from parties over how the maps should be redrawn. The court has already decided that they will make only minimal changes to the current voting boundaries, with a goal of assuring that each district has the same number of voters. Protesters claim that minimal changes will lock-in maps that favor the GOP from a decade ago.
