IRON RIVER, MI (WSAU-WXPR) – Iron River and other communities in the Upper Peninsula are celebrating this week.
Olympian Nick Baumgartner brought home the gold.
Baumgartner was heartbroken in during the Olympics after not qualifying for finals in his individual snowboarding event. He was able to turn it around and win gold with Lindsey Jacobellis in the mixed team snowboard cross competition.
Baumgartner told community members in Iron River how grateful he was for their support. “I’ve never sacrificed or worked as hard as I did this off season. I did that for a reason. I know I’m running out of chances and I wanted so bad to bring this back and share it with the people who have been behind me and supported me. You guys we did it.”
Baumgartner was the oldest snowboarder competing in the Beijing Olympics.
This was his fourth Olympics and his first ever Gold Medal.
