RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU) — Snowmobile enthusiasts have been waiting for trails around the region to open for several weeks, and on Saturday that wait came to an end.
Trails in Oneida and Vilas Counties finally opened this weekend. Snowmobile riders weren’t the only ones excited according to Oneida County Forester Joe Renick, who spoke with WAOW TV.
“Snowmobiling is one of our biggest forms of tourism up here,” he said. “Without snowmobiling, a lot of these businesses might even have to close for a couple months during the winter.”
Oneida County trails opened early Saturday morning. In Vilas County, they opened at 6 PM. Riders reported typical early-season conditions in most areas.
The mild winter so far has prevented many trails across the region from opening due to a lack of snow.
