MADISON, WI (WSAU) — As expected more Native American Tribes are lining up to allow event wagering at their casinos; looking to cash in on the lucrative sports betting market.
Governor Tony Evers and the Forest County Potawatomi have announced an agreement that will allow the tribe to open sportsbooks at their casinos in Carter and Milwaukee before the end of 2022.
“We appreciate Governor Evers and his Administration working with us in a government-to-government manner to provide our Tribe the tools needed to compete in the marketplace and giving us the business certainty to continue our investments in Milwaukee and throughout the state,” said Potawatomi Chairman Ned Daniels Jr in a press release.
The agreement will now go to the US Department of the Interior for a 45-day review period, which is seen as a formality. Similar agreements have already been rubber-stamped with the Oneida Nation and St. Croix Chippewas, allowing them to open sports books at their facilities.
It’s expected that more of Wisconsin’s federally recognized tribes will look to get involved in the sports betting industry later this year. Since a Supreme Court ruling paved the way for sports gambling to roll out nationwide, the industry has boomed thanks to partnerships with major North American sports leagues such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, and MLS.
Early estimates showed a 70% increase in bets on Super Bowl LVI this year compared to Super Bowl LV in 2021.
