KIEV, UKRAINE (MetroSource-WSAU) — The Russian invasion of Ukraine is underway.
Ukraine reports Russian troops have been attacking across multiple borders since receiving their orders to invade. The state border service reports that troops attacked the border from Belarus, north of the capital Kyiv, with support from Belarus.
Ukrainian officials say attacks are targeting border forces and checkpoints in the east and north are with artillery, heavy equipment and small arms. Attacks are also reportedly coming from Crimea, a part of Ukraine seized by Russia in 2014. Ukrainian armed forces and national guard are reportedly firing back.
European leaders are condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission issued a joint statement this morning accusing Moscow of violating international law and undermining European and global security. It went on to say that use of force like this has no place in the 21st Century.
The European Council will meet today to discuss possible measures against Russia. The foreign ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia also issued a statement, calling the attacks a crime against the Ukrainian people and called for the international community to impose the strongest possible sanctions. Poland’s foreign minister said the lives of millions are at stake and urged Russia to stop all military action immediately.
President Biden will address the nation today with reports of a Russian invasion of Ukraine underway. In a statement late Wednesday night, Biden said his prayers are with the people of Ukraine as they “suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces.” He said the “premeditated war” will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.
Biden noted he is meeting with G7 counterparts on Thursday morning and then will tell the American people what consequences the U.S. and its Allies will impose on Russia.
