MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Lawmakers in Madison are set to report for a special session regarding Governor Tony Ever’s proposal to return a portion of the recently announced multi-billion dollars state surplus to residents.
Ever’s plan calls for all residents to receive a $150 refund for themselves and their dependents. The plan also calls for a new caregiver tax credit and a $750 million investment in education.
Special sessions called by Governor Evers have been less than successful in the last few years. Each one has lasted just seconds, with Republican leaders gaveling in and out with little to no discussion. This includes sessions on gun control bills, COVID-19 protocols, BadgerCare expansion, and funding for schools.
Republican leaders have called the Governor’s proposal “an election-year gimmick,” saying they’d rather use the surplus to lower taxes in the next two-year budget.
