STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A Plover teenager was charged with five felonies during a court appearance Monday. Prosecutors say 18-year-old Alec Varney “freaked out” and wounded two friends with a shotgun and stabbed his mother during an April 26th incident at his home in Plover.
Varney was also charged with five misdemeanors, including battery against his father.
The incident happned around 4:45 AM while Varney and his friends were smoking pot and drinking. He took off in his car and was caught several hours later.
The two 19-year-old witnesses told investigators Varney shot them with a shotgun after “freaking out, pacing and making statements” claiming his friends were plotting to kill him and his family. One friend said Varney got a shotgun and pointed it at the other friend, “looking down the sights,” prompting the friend to reach under a couch and try to retrieve a .22-caliber rifle. Varney fired once, hitting both teens.
The noise from the shot awakened Varney’s parents who rushed to the basement. Varney’s mother asked what was going on and he “continued screaming” before attacking her with a “big knife” and cutting her hand and wrestling his father to the floor.
The parents fled upstairs, locked their bedroom door, and called police.
During a court apperance on Monday Varney’s bond was increased from $100,000 to $1 million. His next court appearance is May 29.
