CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) Today’s Conley Commentary is about Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and his visit to Wisconsin yesterday.
Let me be clear: I have no problem whatsoever that Pete Buttigieg is gay. My type of conservatism tells me what happens in someone’s home, and particularly in someone’s bedroom, is none of my business. I do not care that Pete Buttigieg has chosen another man as his life partner. If that’s the relationship that fulfills him and brings him happiness, I’m glad for him.
My problem with Pete Buttigieg is that he’s grossly unqualified for the cabinet position that he holds. You would think that the Transportation Secretary actually knows something about transportation. He doesn’t.
He’s the former Mayor of South Bend, Indiana. It’s a rundown, rust-belt city with notoriously bad potholes. It has a city bus system. And Mayor Pete’s one transportation initiative as Mayor… trying to move his city’s commuter rail station from the airport to downtown… was rejected.
Mayor Pete is very smart – he went to college at Harvard and Oxford – but he studied history and philosophy, not transportation or logistics. After school he worked as an environmental consultant. In the military he worked to shut down terrorists financial networks.
And all of that is fine, until we have supply chain problems that are causing massive inflation and shortages on store shelves, and we have a Transportation Secretary who doesn’t know about those things. Congress passed a $1.2-trillion slush fund – the Build Back Better Plan – and put the money in the hands of someone who has no idea how spend it.
And that’s my problem with Pete Buttigieg. The Biden Administration decided that they needed the most diverse cabinet in history. So, of course, it had to include a gay man. Never mind about things that should matter, like his qualifications.
