WESTON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Emerald Ash Borer has been found in Weston for the first time.
The parasitic beetle was found in an ash tree it had killed in Kennedy Park in early March, forcing the village to cut down the other 16 ash trees in the park area.
That didn’t solve the problem, as the village said they will be removing ash trees throughout the area for the next few years. “So we have around 117 ash trees that are without our parks and street trees, so the plan is to actually remove about a third of the trees each year over the next three years.” said Shawn Osterbrink, Director of Parks and Recreation for the Village of Weston.
Those trees will be replaced, the parks department saying they’ll use maple, elm, and oak trees.
For those who have ash trees on their property, the village advises keeping a close eye on the trees. Look for any signs of damage or rot, and report it if necessary to the parks department.
