We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago……
The crossover of secular and gospel reached an apogee in the late 60s-early 70’s with the ascendency of the Staple Singers. Pops and his daughters, Mavis, Cleotha & Yvonne released the LP “BeAltitude” and it was a doozy.
Backed by the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, the Memphis Horns and arranged and produced by Al Bell of Stax Records the album shines with slinky grooves that meld with the uplifting message in the lyrics.
The hits are here. “Respect Yourself” and especially “I’ll Take You There” are monsters. Mavis is awesome and the band led by David Hood, Roger Hawkins, Barry Beckett & Terry Manning bringsthe goods.
There’s alot more to treasure on the album even if you aren’t of the religious persuasion. “This World”, “We The People”, “Are You Sure” and especially “Who” are standouts.
As one reviewer labeled it, “an album of soul heat, gospel fire & bluesey-rock credibility. An adult, thoughtful record.” Plus you can dance to it!
