WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wisconsin Rapids man who put an abortion-causing drug into his pregnant girlfriend’s water bottle will spend 5 years in prison.
Jeffery S. Smith pled no contest to charges of first-degree attempted homicide of an unborn child and was sentenced on Friday in Marathon County court. After completing his prison term, he’ll be subject to 15 years of supervised release.
Smith had been scheduled to go to trial on the charges next week.
The charges stem from a January 18th, 2018 incident when police were called to a home on North 3rd Avenue in Wausau. When officers arrived, they talked with a woman who was 20 weeks pregnant. She accused the father of the child of putting something in her water bottle, adding that he had previously tried to convince her to get an abortion.
The bottle was taken to the Wisconsin State Crime Lab for testing. Results showed the presence of Mifepristone, which is a drug used to terminate a pregnancy. Empty packages of Mifepristone were also found at Smith’s home in Grand Rapids.
