NFL London Games
GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — With the NFL Draft in the rear view the league is now preparing to roll out the 2022-23 Preseason and Regular Season schedule for all 32 teams.
The full schedule release is set for May 12th, though the league is going to slow-roll some of the games in the coming days. That includes the 2022 International Series games which will be announced on Wednesday.
Green Bay is giving up one of their nine regular-season home dates to play at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, their first-ever trip abroad for a regular season game.
The arrangement comes as part of the NFL’s new scheduling formula which has AFC (odd-numbered years) and NFC (even-numbered years) teams alternating between one home preseason game and nine regular-season game each season. In years where a team is hosting nine regular-season contests, they can be chosen by the league to play a game internationally.
The league is also playing International Series games in Munich and Mexico City this year.
Green Bay was rumored to be in contention to play a game in London as the visiting team in 2016 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But the Jaguars, like so many other teams scheduled to host games internationally, were unwilling to give up the gate revenue that comes with Green Bay’s hearty traveling fan base. Instead, the two teams played the regular-season opener in Jacksonville.
The Packers did play a preseason game in Winnipeg, Manitoba three years ago against Oakland on a modified 80-yard field due to safety concerns with converting the Blue Bombers playing surface from CFL to NFL regulations.
The schedule rollout started during the Draft when it was announced that the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs would play the first game of the reworked Thursday Night Football package in Week Two which will stream nationally on Amazon Prime and be available via local broadcast television in the Kansas City and Los Angeles markets. Other national and primetime games of note will be rolled out starting May 9th leading up to the full release the evening of May 12th.
