STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — SentryWorld Golf Resort in Stevens Point has been awarded a $30,000 state grant to help with expenses in preparation for the 2023 USGA Men’s Senior Open tournament.
Governor Tony Evers and Department of Tourism Secretary-Designee Ann Sayers announced the grant during a press conference at the recently opened Inn at SentryWorld boutique hotel. “These funds will help ensure that visitors have the best possible experience so they will consider coming back to SentryWorld, and our state’s many other award-winning golf courses for years to come.”
The money comes from the state’s Ready, Set, Go grant program.
Sayers said Wisconsin has already become a golf destination for professionals and hobby golfers alike and credits the staff and the region’s natural beauty for helping to attract such an event. “We will once again be on the national and international stage,” said Sayers. “This selection is a testament to SentryWorld as a premier golf destination thanks to Central Wisconsin’s picturesque landscape and the ingenuity of Robert Trent Jones Jr and his collaborators. SentryWorld features a number of hols that stand among the state’s most beautiful including the signature flower hole.”
The hole she’s referencing is the par 3 16th, which features more than 33,000 flowers around the green.
Sayers also credits the Stevens Point community with promoting other local businesses and attractions that will become a part of visitors’ travel itineraries during that week, or could be a part of future visits to the region should those guests return for future visits.
The 2023 Men’s Senior Open is scheduled for June 29th through July 2nd. Volunteer opportunities are available for the event, which could bring as much as $20 million in economic impact to Central Wisconsin and areas beyond for the week.
