WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Department of Conservation, Planning, and Zoning says they need additional information from Green Light Metals regarding their Metallic Mining Exploration Permit Application.
According to a news release, the application remains pending while the additional requirements are fulfilled. “The County’s General Code of Ordinances on metallic mining requires the permit application to be submitted at the same time the company files for the necessary permits with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and other regulatory agencies. There is additional information needed before the application can be reviewed and processed for the permit to be issued,” said Laurie Miskimins, Marathon County Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Director.

If granted, the permit would allow the company to explore the deposit within the parameters of the permit, which is the first step in the lengthy process of determining if the gold located within the deposit is worth mining. Representatives from Green Light Metals previously told WSAU News promising results would only lead to more exploratory drilling, and the process of permitting and designing a mine itself could take several years as well.
The Toronto-based company recently opened an office in Medford under Green Light Wisconsin. They secured the rights to the Easton deposit last winter from Aquila Resources, another Canadian company. They will give a presentation to the county’s Environmental Resources Committee at a meeting later this month.
