CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI (WSAU) — A passenger in Colton Treu’s pick-up truck is facing changes in connection with a crash that killed four people.
John Stender, 23, told investigators that he tried to grab the steering wheel when Treu had trouble controlling his car while huffing. He said Treu almost drove into a ditch. The truck eventually crashed into a group of girl scouts who were taking part in a highway clean-up program
Treu was convicted on four counts of vehicular homicide and is serving a 54-year jail term.
Stender is charged with harboring and aiding a felon, falsifying information, and intentionally abusing a hazardous substance. A police report says Treu did not stop after the crash, and had another person move the vehicle from his driveway into a garage. Treu was caught when police followed a trail of leaking radiator coolant to his home.
Stender is now free on $10,000 signature bond. His next court appearance is May 28.
