RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) — The Rhinelander-based Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association has endorsed Republican Tom Tiffany of Minocqua for U.S. Congress.
At a press conference, Association Director Henry Schoenebeck said the organization appreciated Tiffany’s efforts. “We don’t often endorse candidates, in fact, Tom is probably the fourth one we endorsed.
“Our organization has been in operation since 1940. I’m not sure what happened way back then. During my tenure, Tom is the fourth one we’ve endorsed. It’s a good day for us. We look forward to seeing Senator Tiffany in Congress.”
Tiffany said he greatly appreciated the endorsement and highlighted the sustainability of modern timber production. He says the Association helped him in his work as State Senator. “We completely re-wrote the Managed Forest Law.
“Updated it for the 21st century and it’s working to bring more wood to the marketplace andto make sure our industries stay strong here in Wisconsin. After a couple of decades of decline in the paper industry. We saw it where we had mills closing in Wisconsin, we now are seeing optimism in Wisconsin.”
Tiffany also pointed out his efforts in 2011 to bring more timber production out of the national forest through what is called Good Neighbor Authority, where there’s a cooperation between the federal, state and county foresters.
“Here in the Great Lakes states, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is probably one of the better-managed national forests in the U.S. It’s atrocious in the western states. But it could be better. We highlighted that in 2011. It was a couple of years later people like Congressman Duffy and others led the charge to put in place the Good Neighbor Authority.”
On other topics, Tiffany backed President Trump’s call to reduce regulations by two for every one that is introduced.
Tiffany faces fellow Republican Jason Church in the February 18 primary. The winner will face either Democrat Tricia Zunker or Lawrence Dale May 12 to serve the unexpired term of Sean Duffy.
