We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago….
If you only know the band Nazareth from “Hair of The Dog” you will not even recognize the band on their 2nd LP “Exercises” which came out in July 1972.
The hard rockin from the debut has been replaced for the most part by acoustic ballads some drenched in strings, harmonies and even country-rock songs.
Not to say it’s all bad…but it’s certainly not what was expected. Guitarist Manny Charlton, who just died a few weeks ago, does pull out his electric ax for a few cuts including “Woke Up This Morning” and “Called Her Name”. I kind of like the country stuff…”Cats Eye, Apple Pie” and “Fool About You”.
But, if youre expecting the raspy vocals of front man Dan McCafferty and Charlton’s snarling guitar, you would be better served to check out some of their other LPs. If you like English-Scottish folk-rock, you might dig some of this. There’s bagpipes on a couple of cuts for chrissakes.
See what you think…
