MILWAUKEE, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) Matt Carlino made a three-pointer with 11-point-two seconds left, to give Marquette a 53-to-52 home victory over Creighton last night. The Golden Eagles were down by four with a minute to play, when Carlino hit a fade-away jump shot.
Creighton’s Will Artino was then called for traveling with 21 seconds left, which gave Marquette its opening. Carlino managed to break free off a screen to make his pull-up three-pointer from the top of the key. A replay review confirmed that Carlino’s feet were behind the three-point line. The Bluejays then scrambled to make a final push for victory — but a hook shot and a put-back didn’t go in.
Creighton went nine-and-a-half minutes without a field goal in the first half. Marquette had a similar futility streak in the second half, going without a field for over ten minutes while committing ten second-half turnovers.
Carlino led the Eagles in scoring with 19 points. Rick Kreklow scored 13 for Creighton, which dropped to 0-and-5 in the Big East and 9-and-9 overall. Marquette improved to 2-and-2 in the conference and 10-and-6 overall. They’ll play at Xavier on Saturday.
