Officers add that the scammers spoofed the phone number to make it appear as if they were legitimate.
Police released the statement to raise awareness about the tactic, adding that residents should remain on guard to all types of fraud as the scammers continue to evolve their methods.
“We strongly encourage taking the time and verifying the identities of people calling. If an officer were to contact you it is always acceptable to verify our identity by calling the Wood County Dispatch at 715-387-4394,” reads the post.
A similar scam tactic was deployed in the Wausau, Merrill, and Sevens Point areas in 2020, which turned out to be an international case and has led to multiple arrests and convictions.
