We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
Back in the 70’s “Smokin OPS” was a term known as Smoking Other Peoples…whether it meant cigarettes or something else…in the case of the 1972 LP from Bob Seger, it stand for Other Peoples Songs…as this is an LP of mostly covers…and it’s pretty good.
It includes a couple of tunes that Seger would include later when he formed the Silver Bullet band and would stretch out on the classic live LP “Live Bullet”
“Let It Rock” is an old Chuck Berry tune and “Heavy Music” is a Seger original.
The other covers range from the solid (Bo Diddley/Who Do You Love and Turn On Your Love Light) to the pedestrian (Love The One Youre With & If I Was A Carpenter).
I’m told this album is almost impossible to find in second-hand record shops as it’s been out of print for years. I’ve also read where Seger doesnt like the record.
It does show a talented artist getting closer to busting out.
