Mark Canha hit two home runs, including the go-ahead two-run shot in the ninth inning off David Robertson, to rally the New York Mets past the host Philadelphia Phillies 10-9 on Sunday.
Canha had three hits and drove in five runs for the Mets, who won three of four in the series. It was Canha’s third career multi-homer game. Brandon Nimmo added a solo homer in the ninth. Trevor May (2-0) earned the win in relief. Edwin Diaz allowed one run in the ninth but still earned his 28th save in 31 chances.
Jean Segura had put the Phillies ahead 8-7 in the bottom of the eighth with a pinch-hit solo home run. After Jeff McNeil led off the ninth with a double, Canha smacked his 10th homer of the season to put the Mets up 9-8 before Nimmo’s shot made it 10-8.
Alec Bohm hit two homers and drove in six runs for the Phillies. Bohm had three hits, while Bryson Stott, Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Nick Castellanos added two hits apiece and Nick Maton added two RBIs.
Astros 5, Braves 4
Kyle Tucker’s RBI single drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to help rally visiting Houston to a win over Atlanta to salvage one game of the three-game series between last year’s World Series contestants.
Tucker, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the sixth inning, lined a single off reliever Dylan Lee (3-1) to right field to drive in Yordan Alvarez. Tucker took second when Guillermo Heredia bobbled the ball and was charged with an error. Jeremy Pena followed with a sacrifice fly.
Houston starter Jose Urquidy (12-4) went seven innings for the third time in his last four starts. He allowed two runs on five hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Atlanta starter Charlie Morton pitched six innings against his former team and allowed two runs on five hits, two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Yankees 4, Blue Jays 2
Andrew Benintendi hit a tiebreaking, two-run home run with one out in the seventh inning, and host New York beat Toronto to avoid a four-game sweep and end the Blue Jays’ four-game winning streak.
After retiring former right fielder Paul O’Neill’s No. 21 jersey, the Yankees won for only the fifth time in 20 games and improved to 10-20 since the All-Star break thanks to Benintendi’s biggest swing since being acquired from Kansas City last month.
New York starter Nestor Cortes allowed one run and three hits in six innings. He struck out five, striking out the side in the sixth after Aaron Judge was plunked by Alek Manoah in the fifth.
Orioles 5, Red Sox 3
Jorge Mateo’s three-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Baltimore, which was playing as the host, past Boston in the fifth annual Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa.
Cionel Perez (7-1) pitched the eighth inning for the win and Felix Bautista pitched the ninth for his eighth save after allowing a leadoff homer to Xander Bogaerts. Anthony Santander had three hits for the Orioles, who took two of three from Boston.
Red Sox pinch hitter Franchy Cordero tied the score 2-2 with a leadoff homer against Dillon Tate in the eighth. Boston starter Nick Pivetta worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk. He fanned nine.
Tigers 4, Angels 0
Eduardo Rodriguez pitched five scoreless innings in his first major league start since May 18, Riley Greene hit a leadoff homer and host Detroit blanked Los Angeles.
Rodriguez (2-3) gave up four hits and three walks and struck out five. He had a stint on the injured list with a rib cage injury, then was placed on the restricted list for personal reasons. Greene reached base four times and scored two runs. Victor Reyes drove in a pair of runs.
Angels starter Shohei Ohtani (10-8), who was battling a stomach virus, gave up three runs on five hits and four walks in four innings. He was lifted for a pinch hitter in the fifth. Mike Trout reached base three times, including two hits.
Reds 9, Pirates 5
Cincinnati scored four runs in the sixth inning to beat host Pittsburgh and win two of three games in the teams’ weekend series.
Cincinnati won despite a poor starting performance from Mike Minor (2-10). He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits. The Reds are 7-5 against the Pirates this season.
Pittsburgh starting pitcher Zach Thompson (3-10) allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings. The game fell apart for the Pirates when Manny Banuelos entered the game. Banuelos allowed all four runs in the sixth inning.
Rays 3, Royals 2
Harold Ramirez went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs, including the game-winning RBI in the fifth inning, as Tampa Bay beat Kansas City in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Christian Bethancourt added a solo home run, Brandon Lowe had two hits and a run and Randy Arozarena posted a hit, walk, run and stolen base as the Rays improved to 7-2 over their past nine games.
Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. and MJ Melendez each produced doubles, but the club totaled only four hits for the third straight game and lost for the sixth time in seven outings. Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke was attempting to win at Tropicana Field for the first time in his 19 years in the majors but was removed after allowing two runs on five hits in four innings.
Rangers 7, Twins 0
Marcus Semien homered and drove in three runs while Kohei Arihara fired six scoreless innings as Texas blanked Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Arihara (1-1), making just his second start of the year, allowed four hits and walked none while fanning three for the Rangers. Taylor Hearn relieved him and struck out five while retiring all nine hitters he faced for his first major league save as Texas earned its second straight win in a series that ends on Monday night.
Joe Ryan (9-6) was a tough-luck loser for the Twins, giving up only two hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Jorge Polanco had two of Minnesota’s four hits.
Brewers 5, Cubs 2
Keston Hiura tied the game with a solo home run in the seventh, then added some insurance with a late two-run drive into the left-center-field bleachers as visiting Milwaukee rallied for a victory over Chicago.
Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just Ian Happ’s 100th career homer in the first and Seiya Suzuki’s 10th blast of the season in the fourth, plus two other hits. He walked two and tossed five strikeouts.
Suzuki also recorded a single and double for the Cubs, who played without slugger Patrick Wisdom after he injured his finger on a play at the plate during Saturday’s victory. X-rays were negative, according to the team.
Giants 9, Rockies 8 (11 innings)
Evan Longoria hit a grand slam among his three hits, Austin Wynns had two hits and San Francisco beat Colorado in Denver.
Dominic Leone (4-4) pitched two-thirds of an inning of relief and Zack Littell got the final three outs for his first save. San Francisco scored the winning run on Wilmer Flores’ sacrifice fly in the 11th inning.
San Francisco scored twice in the 10th on an RBI single by Thairo Estrada and a run-scoring double by Wynns to lead 8-6. Colorado tied it in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Ryan McMahon and Charlie Blackmon, who each finished with two hits for the Rockies.
Athletics 5, Mariners 3
Left-hander JP Sears pitched five strong innings, Sam Moll escaped an eighth-inning jam and Oakland made it two out of three over visiting Seattle with a triumph.
Shea Langeliers had a single, double and triple, driving in one run and scoring another, for the A’s, who won for the fourth time in their last six games following a nine-game losing streak.
Shooting for a third consecutive series win over Oakland, the Mariners rallied to 4-3 in the seventh on an RBI double by pinch hitter Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez’s third hit of the game, an RBI single. Luis Castillo (5-5) suffered his first loss in four starts for the Mariners, charged with four runs on eight hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out five.
Dodgers 10, Marlins 3
Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy hit home runs, rookie Ryan Pepiot went six strong innings and Los Angeles finished a three-game sweep of visiting Miami with a victory.
Will Smith drove in three runs as the Dodgers extended their home winning streak to nine games while improving to 16-3 in August. Los Angeles also improved its major league-best record to 84-36. Pepiot (2-0) gave up two runs and four hits on his 25th birthday with two walks and a career-best seven strikeouts.
Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (11-6) gave up season highs in runs (six) and hits (10) over a season-low 3 2/3 innings to raise his ERA to 2.19. He had one walk with five strikeouts. Lewin Diaz and JJ Bleday hit home runs for the Marlins.
Cardinals 6, Diamondbacks 4
Nolan Arenado drove in three runs as St. Louis defeated Arizona in Phoenix for its seventh consecutive victory.
Jake Woodford (2-0), the third of five Cardinals pitchers, earned the victory. Giovanny Gallegos closed out the ninth for his 12th save. Cardinals starting pitcher Jose Quintana lasted just 2 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks.
Starting pitcher Merrill Kelly allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings for the Diamondbacks, who lost for the fifth time in seven games. Kelly struck out six batters and walked three.
Padres 2, Nationals 1
Josh Bell hit a two-run homer off Patrick Corbin in the sixth inning to give San Diego a second straight 2-1 victory over visiting Washington and a split of their four-game series.
Nelson Cruz had given Washington a 1-0 lead with a solo homer off Padres starter Sean Manaea with one out in the fourth.
Manaea (7-6) held the Nationals to Cruz’s homer on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts over seven innings — thanks in part to several outstanding defensive plays by shortstop Ha-Seong Kim. Manaea threw just 69 pitches.
