DUBLIN, IRELAND (WSAU) — The season’s first two Big Ten football games are in the books, including one conference game played overseas.
Northwestern topped Nebraska 31-28. Wildcats QB Ryan Hilinski recorded two passing touchdowns. While Cornhusker RB Anthony Grant led his team with 101 yards and two scores in the losing effort.
In non-conference play, Wyoming fell to Illinois 38-6. Illini RB Chase Brown picked up 151 yards and two TD on 19 carries. QB Tommy Devito added two passing TDs.
Games played the week before Labor Day, colloquially known as “Week Zero,” are generally reserved for Mountain West Conference teams and anyone who plays a road game at the University of Hawaii, as playing the Warriors on the islands grants schools an extra home game during the regular season. In recent years, FCS games that involve a national TV broadcast and other novelty games such as those played outside the USA have also been included.
The season begins in full on Thursday, September 1st with Purdue hosting Penn State and Minnesota kicking off against New Mexico State. Wisconsin will host Illinois State on Saturday, September 3rd in the Badgers’ season opener.
