MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has received approval from the Federal Highway Administration for its plans to increase access to electric vehicle charging stations along several major highways and interstates.
The plan involves the creation of a new alternative fuel corridor along Highway 29 from Eau Claire to Green Bay and the extension of a corridor along US 51 north of Wausau to the Michigan border. Additionally, a new corridor would be created along Highway 8 in the Northwoods.
The DOT anticipates installing up to 60 charging stations located within 50 miles of each other along those routes in the next five years, at a cost of about $78.65 million. Money is expected to come from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) initative.
Officials say that will create the needed infrastructure to allow electric vehicle owners to take their vehicles on longer trips.
Specific locations for the new charging stations have not been announced.
