MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — The State Patrol has identified the man suspected of driving drunk when he crossed the center line on Highway 17 this weekend, striking another vehicle head-on and killing an eight-year-old boy.
Officers say John Lahti was behind the wheel of a 2017 Dodge Ram that struck an oncoming Chevy Silverado, injuring three and killing one.
Three passengers in the Silverado sustained non-life-threatening injuries including two adults and a nine-year-old girl. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials in Lincoln County have recommended charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle against Lahti. Court action against him is pending.
