WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Public Health and Safety Committee has delayed action on an ordinance that would prohibit the sale of pets from large-scale breeders or mill operations to allow more time for the proposal to marinate.
“I understand the intent here but we are also potentially not real tight here,” said Alder Doug Diny. “There may be some unintended consequences.”
Diny adds that could be someone who owns an independent pet supply store, but also has a dog or cat they occasionally breed.
Committee Chair Lisa Rasmussen said she does think that the proposal is on the right track by allowing enough room for residents who want to breed their own pets to do so. She added that holding off a decision at this time so the matter could be discussed alongside a license renewal for a dog kennel service “might make a little more sense.”
Many on the committee agreed that doing so would make sure that the two measures aren’t interfering with each other.
Mayor Katie Rosenberg opened the discussion by noting that the city does not have any stores that currently sell pets.
The committee is scheduled to meet again on October 17th.
