ANN ARBOR, MI (WSAU) — Trent Fredric scored a Gordie Howe Hat Trick to lead the Badger Mens Hockey team to a 4-2 win over Michigan on Saturday, securing yet another Big Ten weekend split for Wisconsin.
Fredric’s goal eight minutes into the game opened the scoring. He added an assist on Ryan Wagner’s goal five minutes later. Cullen Hurley then gave Wisconsin a 3-0 lead after the first period and Wyatt Kalynuk made it 4-0 midway through the second on a goal assisted by Fredric.
The 4-0 hole forced the Wolverines to pull starting netminder Hayden Lavigne early in the second period in favor of Jack LaFontaine. Lavigne allowed those 4 goals on just 11 shots and was tagged with the loss. LaFontaine stopped all 18 shots he faced to kept a clean sheet for the 34:55 he was in net.
Kyle Hayton allowed two goals on 32 shots faced for the badgers, both goals coming in the 3rd period.
The win lifts the Badgers to 8-9-3 (28 points) in conference play and moves them back into 3rd place in the standings, one point clear of fourth place Michigan. Notre Dame (47 points) and Ohio State (34 points) remain first and second respectively following weekend action.
It was a lost weekend in Columbus for the #1 ranked Wisconsin womens hockey team as they dropped both games with the Buckeyes including a 3-1 setback on Saturday.
Alexis Mauermann gave the Badgers an ealry lead with a goal in the first period but that was all they could muster against Buckeye goaltender Kassiday Suave. Wisconsin out-shot Ohio State 35-20.
Kristen Campbell had 17 saves for Wisconsin.
The Badgers, now 26-3-1, 17-2-1 in Big Ten, will travel to UM-Duluth on Friday and Saturday.
