It’ll be a busy night at Wausau City Hall.
First, the City’s Finance Committee will consider a motion to formally accept grant money totaling more than $3.16 million for the hiring of nine new full-time firefighter positions beginning next year.
The grant money will sustain those positions for three years and help the department get up to full staffing, a movement that has been front and center for new Fire Chief Bob Barteck has been calling for more staffing to help improve service to residents as the city’s call volume increases.
Barteck has noted that his staff is working with the same number of crew members as they were 50 years ago, while the city’s population has increased. The situation has also caused some morale issues with his staff, as time off has been hard to come by for some on the force.
Once the finance committee considers that measure, it will immediately go to the full council later in the evening for approval.
The full council is also set to consider the latest proposal from developer T Wall Enterprises for the former Wausau Center Mall site. That proposal calls for a mix of retail and housing for the property, with an $11 million tax incentive from the city.
The project would also include parking, both above and underground, and retail/office space. The building would surround an inner green space as well. If approved construction would begin next spring and last into 2024.
Tuesday’s meetings will begin at 5:30 at City Hall.
