PLATTEVILLE and STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The UWSP men and women were swept by UW-Platteville in conference play on Saturday.
In Platteville, it was a strong 22-7 3rd quarter run that helped the Pioneers run away from the Pointers 75-62. Carly Cerrato led the Pointers with 12 points and four rebounds, Bailee Collins and Amber Baehman both added 11 in the losing effort.
UWSP went 20-45 from the field for the game (44%) but just 8-21 from three-point range (38%). The Pioneers led from start to finish, shooting an even 50% from the field and 4-13 from long range.
The Pointer men had their hearts broken on a last-second put-back dunk to give the Pioneers a key road conference win 61-60 at Berg gym.
Ethan Bublitz had just given the Pointers a 60-59 edge with 7 seconds remaining before the Pioneers would miss a lay-up, only to have the rebound turned into a game-winning dunk.
Bublitz led UWSP with 21 points, a season-high for him. Canon O’Heron added 19, Nate Dodge scored 12.
The next WIAC action for the Pointers will be Wednesday against UW-Stout. The men will be in Menomonie, the women at home.
The #1 ranked UWSP mens hockey team dominated River Falls with a 6-2 win on Saturday. Six different players scored goals for the Pointers.
Carter Roo and Luke McElhenie scored in the first period. Brennan Miller, TJ Roo, Tanner Karty and Colin Raver scored in the 2nd period.
Connor Ryckman had 13 saves. He is 18-0-1 this season.
The Pointers, now 19-0-2, will have this weekend off. They return to action on Feb 1st at UW-Stout.
The UWSP womens hockey team got hammered 8-1 on Saturday night at River Falls. Alana Achterkirch got the lone Pointer goal.
The Pointers, now 8-10-2, will houst Eau Claire on Saturday.
