MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead Saturday but ultimately fell to the University of Denver 4-3 in overtime.
Dominick Mersch and Brock Caufield each found the back of the net in the first six minutes of the contest before the Pioneers would rattle off two goals of their own to level the score early in the second period.
Matthew Freytag put the Badgers back in front at 3-2 at the ten-minute mark of the second with a power-play goal.
Denver outshot the Badgers 40-16 in the contest but went 0-4 on the power play. Wisconsin went 1-4 on the power play.
Jack Berry took the loss in net, stopping 36 of 40 shots faced. Filip Larsson saved 13 of 16 shots against.
The #8 Pioneers improved to 12-4-2 on the season after sweeping the weekend series at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin is now 8-9-3.
The Badgers will return to action next Saturday with an exhibition match against the USA Under-18 National Development Program team. The U-18 squad is based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan and plays a split schedule each winter against NCAA and United States Hockey League competition. The U18 squad owns eight wins over NCAA squads such as Notre Dame, Minnesota-Duluth, and Michigan.
