CHICAGO, IL (WSAU-WRN) — The Big Ten men’s basketball regular-season title trophy paid a visit to Coach Howard Moore on Monday.
Greg Guard and his staff took the trophy to a Chicago recovery center where Moore has been staying. Assistant Coach Dean Oliver told WIBA it was a special moment to see Moore touch the trophy.
“To see his eyes light up, to see his smile when we came in with that trophy- it’s a moment we will remember for the rest of our lives. Such a special moment for all of us,” he said.
Moore and his family were involved in a two-vehicle crash in the summer of 2019 in Michigan. A drunk driver traveling the wrong way down a four-lane highway struck their vehicle head-on. Moore’s wife and daughter were killed in the crash, his son was injured but has since recovered.
Moore then suffered a cardiac incident while recovering. He remains on the Badger coaching staff but has been on leave this season. It’s unclear when he may return to the sideline.
Oliver says his recovery has been going well. “He’s doing well, but we still encourage everyone to pray for him. Those prayers and thoughts are working.”
