WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The Community Clubhouse, a gathering place for people with mental illness, will close on Friday.
North Central Health Care announced earlier this year that it would discontinue the program.
Mort McBain, interim director of NCHC, said it is not possible to run a program that isn’t located at the healthcare center’s facilities. The clubhouse had been funded, in part, through Marathon County’s tax levy. It also serves people who live in Lincoln and Langlade counties.
NCHC says some clients will use other, similar community-based programs. The Marathon County Literary Council says it will offer its facilities to people who used the clubhouse on a temporary basis.
Two of the three North Central Health Care employees who ran the clubhouse have resigned. The third worker has been reassigned.
Some mental health officials in the area hope to open a program similar to the Community Clubhouse that isn’t run by NCHC.
