The 2023 tax bills will begin to take shape in Wausau this week when the Board of Education meets to adopt the 2023 budget on Monday at the Longfellow Education Center.
According to the agenda, leaders are proposing a 91-cent drop in the mill rate, which is more than the 43-cent decline that was promised to voters when they passed a $120 million referendum question back in April.
Other factors also came in better than expected for taxpayers, including the sale of the bonds themselves. The District issued those in mid-June, with J.P. Morgan coming in as the low bidder in a move that Finance Director Bob Tess said could easily mean another one-cent drop in the mill rate.
Projects included in the referendum package focus on safety and security features for most all elementary schools and some larger projects in the district’s middle and secondary schools.
Among those are lights and FieldTruf for athletic fields. Some of the district’s fastest-growing elementary schools will get added classroom space as well.
