MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — In a somewhat surprising move Milwaukee Brewers Director of Baseball Operations, David Stearns announced he was stepping down and would become an advisor for the team.
He will be replaced by Matt Arnold who has been Stearns top lieutenant as GM/Senior Vice President of the organization.
It has been reported that Stearns has drawn interest from the New York Mets to run their team. He’s a native New Yorker and grew up a Mets fan, but that, apparently, is not what this is.
The 37 year old Stearns says he wants to step away for awhile and spend more time with his young family. According to Stearns and Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, there is a mechanism in place for the Brewers to get some sort of compensation if Stearns leaves for another job.
Stearns said he has been contemplating this for awhile. He said “this is a job that requires complete and total commitment”.
Stearns brought the Brewers into contention soon after taking over the team from Doug Melvin in 2015. He was able to keep them competitive despite some financial restraints placed on the team by ownership. He will be best remembered for the blockbuster trades that brought both Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain to the team in 2018. He will also be remembered for the Josh Hader trade this past season that didn’t work out as well, at least not yet.
For Arnold, he steps in at a crucial moment in Brewers history. The team is coming off a late collapse that saw them miss the playoffs. They also have 18 players eligible for arbitration. The team also has contract options on Kolten Wong & Brad Boxberger.
Arnold did say at the press conference that Craig Counsell and his coaching staff would return. Counsell’s contract runs through 2023.
