RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) — Some Northern Wisconsin rail lines could be changing hands in the near future.
WXPR Radio in Rhinelander has confirmed that Canadian National intends to sell off just over 450 miles of rail in both Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In a statement, the company says while Wisconsin remains an important part of their rail infrastructure, the lines they want to divest are “underutilized.”
“Wisconsin remains core to CN. Today’s announcement impacts only the underutilized portions of our network, not the main line that is so vital to linking our network. If a new owner acquires these lines CN will still play a central role in the region as these segments will remain connected to our network, safely and reliably linking Wisconsin businesses to markets around the world,” said the company.
Among the lines that will be divested are those between Wausau, Tomahawk, and Bradley according to a map released by CN. Other lines marked for sail include those near Ladysmith, Rhinelander, and Prentice. At least two lines in Michigan are also on the selling block.
In all more than a dozen segments would be sold out of what CN calls its “non-core” network.
Further details, including when the sales may be completed, were not immediately available.
