On this date in 1938 Orson Welles classic 'The War Of The Worlds” aired on CBS Radio. HG Wells story of a Martian Invasion seemed real to some people.
Have you ever heard Jeff Wayne's musical version of the story? It came out in the late 70's and featured narration from Richard Burton. Here it is…its pretty good and features Justin Hayward singing “Forever Autumn”.
Happy Birthday to Grace Slick who turns 80 today. a few years ago someone released her isolated vocal from White Rabbit. No autotune needed!
The NCAA is starting the process to allow college athletes to profit from their name and likeness. The governing board voted unanimously to have its three divisions consider bylaw changes and present new rules befor the end of January 2021. I know there are some folks who consider a college scholarship as enough compensation for a college athletes work but as long as the schools, coaches and NCAA are raking in millions of dollars from these “games” it only seems right that a player should be able to take part in the bonanza that his or her work brings in. Now about that transfer rule….
Wisconsin still can't believe that Micah Potter will have to sit out the first semester of the basketball season. He is a transfer from Ohio State and followed the process. He has already sat out two semesters and didnt play last season for the Buckeyes. The NCAA still says that he will not be available until January. A number of other players, some of whom played up to 30 games last year have been able to transfer and play right away. The Badgers are still trying to get an explanation as they appeal to the NCAA. The Badgers host UW-La Crosse on Friday night to begin the season.
The Bucks are in Boston tonight. I like those East coast games as I have able to watch some of them before crashing.
A Game 7 in the World Series tonight! Scherzer's back and neck spasms have subsided for now and he will pitch against Zach Grienke. If The Nationals can pull it out that would mean the visiting team will have won every game in this series. Wild.
Also another replay controversy last night and Dave Martinez becomes the first manager ejected from a World Series game since Bobby Cox in 1996. The umps call was wrong (and I know the rule about the running lane…it shouldnt even apply in this case) and the replay guys got it wrong too (covering for their co-workers). The throw was bad, the runner was already on the base when the so-called interference happened. And even if you want to be a prick and enforce a reading of the rule that defies common sense in this situation, that shouldnt cover you from responsibility. Another instance this season of the umpires affecting a game in a negative way. If Rendon doesnt homer in the inning there would be even more outrage. Also the reported reason it took so long to review (a non-reviewable call) was they couldnt get a hold of anybody in New York (what??!). Joe Torre was at the game…but his explanation was horseshit too.
Stephen Strasburg is 5-0 in the postseason.
