This is the kind of thing that gives the pooh-bahs that run
high school sports a black eye. Milwaukee Washington junior boys basketball
player Deontay Long, who was a D1 prospect, has pleaded guilty to a Class C
felony of being a party to armed robbery and is facing four years in prison.
According to Travis Wilson of WSN, because
he sat out during some of the fall season, under Milwaukee Public school and
team rules, he will be able to play with his team during the full season. That
means that an admitted felon will be suiting up in the WIAA Tournament and
conceiveably be playing in the State Tournament in a few weeks. This is wrong.
I’m all for second chances, but in many school districts, something like this
would probably get you expelled. To allow him to continue playing, because he’s
good and could get his team to State( and lets face it, that’s why its being
allowed) shows everything that’s bad about some of the adults who run high
school sports. Engaging in high school activities is a privilege not a right.
Whether it’s sports, band, drama or anything else, the idea that you can commit
a felony and keep on participating sends a terrible message. The WIAA likes to
throw it’s muscle around in other areas…what about this?
While we can celebrate the accomplishments of former Badger
running backs James White and Corey Clement in the Super Bowl and the selection
of former Badger JJ Watt as the Walter Payton Man of The Year, we can also
lament the struggles of the Badger basketball team. Former Ch 9 sports guy Dan
Needles looked it up. The last time the UW had more victories in football than
it did in basketball was 1981-82 (7-6) Badgers need to win four out of last 6
to surpass the 13 wins of the football team this past season.
And with Marquette, UWGB and UW-Milwaukee struggling too,
the state of Wisconsin will probably not be part of the NCAA Tournament for the
first time since 1998.
A 4 star high school quarterback has turned down Alabama…to
attend Princeton. Brevin White from Paraclete High School in Lancaster
California says he will play football
and also study economics at the prestigious Ivy League university.
Charlie Berens, who will be in Wausau soon, wants the state government
to change the state flag……
Happy birthday to a couple of classics….Walt Disney’s “Peter
Pan was released on this date in 1953….and Hank Aaron turns 84 today. Listened
to a lot of Braves games on the radio as a kid while hitting whiffle balls over
the roof as Hammerin’ Hank.
Congrats to Wausau 7
th
grader Leo Guo who got to
perform on piano at Carnegie Hall over the weekend. He earned a spot at the Forte International
Music competiton.
I saw this video over the weekend and I leave it here
without comment
Elections have consequences….Trump didn’t mention this in
his State of The Union but the US government is set to borrow $1 trillion this
year, an 84 per cent jump from last year. The reason according to the CBO? Tax
receipts are going to be lower because of the new tax law. So, the party that
railed against deficits during the Obama years is increasing the deficit by a
lot to send billions in tax savings to their rich donors…oh, and a few crumbs
for us…………………….Immigration and Customs continue their rampage against the kids
who were brought here decades ago. The arrested Miguel Perez last week. He’s a
US Army veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan, has live in the US since
he was 8 and has two US citizen children………..a former leader of the American
Nazi Party, holocaust denier and all around anti-semite Arthur Jones, is about
to win the Republican nomination for an Illinois congressional seat. Wonder if
trump will endorse him?………………resistance works:The White House plans
to withdraw Kathleen Hartnett-White’s nomination to lead the Council on
Enviromental Quality. She embarrassed herself at her Congressional hearing by
not being able to answer basic science questions and her radical views on
climate change were too much for even some Republicans to stomach…………..A
National Security Council member has left the White House after suggesting in a
a memo that the government take over the 5G network in the country and another
member of the Security Council (Matthew Pottinger) suggested at a meeting that
a limited military strike on North Korea could be helpful to Republicans in the
mid-term elections. These are the people that trump has advising him……………..The
folks who have been shouting about how the Nunes memo is the worst scandal in
the countries history should be called out for their BS after the release of
the memo showed what a flawed, dishonest piece of crap is is……..
