I missed yesterday's anniversery of the landmark Supreme Court decision in the Loving vs Virginia case on June 12th 1967. It was 9 years earlier when Richard Loving, a white man, married Mildred Jeter, a black woman in Washington DC. They had gone to DC because their marriage was against the law in the state of Virginia where they lived. It violated the state's anti-miscegenation law which said that people classified as “white” and people classified as “colored” could not wed. As if a “classification” would render the heart obsolete. The difference this time is that the two people involved were willing to fight after they were jailed on their return to Virginia. The Supreme Court decision determined that the prohibition was un-constitutional and it ended all race-based legal restrictions on marriage in the United States. The story has been the subject of three movies including “Loving” which came out last year and an interesting documentary called “The Loving Story” that came out in 2011. With the current rise in white supremacist bullshit raising its ugly head again and the recent spate of hate crimes we should always be aware that we are only 50 years away from a time when that kind of thinking was still the law in parts of this country.
June 12th is now recognized as Loving Day.
Nanci Griffith wrote a song about it…
The Brewers play a doubleheader today in St. Louis…pre game at 12:40 on WSAU. The Brewers also selected three players on the first night of the MLB draft. Their first selection was a college 2nd baseman Keston Hiura. He's considered by some of the analyitic guys to be one of the better hitting prospects in this draft. They also picked high school outfielder Tristen Lutz and high school pitcher Caden Lemons.
Most of the Legion baseball was rained out last night…tonights scheduled games include Plover at Wausau…8pm at Athletic Park after the Junior Legion game that starts at 5pm. Wisconsin Rapids at Merrill and Antigo is at Stevens Point.
Packer veterans with at least five years experience are excused from mini-camp which allowed Aaron Rodgers to be in Oakland last night as the Golden State Warriors closed out the Cavs. Kevin Durant was named MVP of the Finals so I guess his much maligned move worked out for him.
Elections have consequences….a new poll says 42% of Trump voters feel it's ok to bodyslam a reporter (you can't make this stuff up). I don't doubt that this is, at least partly because of the right-wing squawk machine's dangerous be-littling of the journalists who are out there trying to shine a light on the machinations of the Trump administration……John McCain says US global leadership was better under Obama than Trump. That's, of course, obvious, but why don't you do something about it Senator? Earn you reputation as a “maverick” and actually vote against some of the crap that the Republicans have brought forward……If Trump was “vindicated” by James Comey's testimony as he says, why is he so worried about special counsel Robert Mueller that he's considering firing him? As Rep Adam Schiff says, “don't waste our time, if you fire him Congress will hire him”…..and finally, the odius Mitch McConnell is at it again. The Senate Republican version of Trump's healthcare plan is so bad for so many people that McConnell and his minions of darkness are trying to sneak it through without hearings and without even letting the public see it. When asked why one Senate Republican aide said “because we aren't stupid”. No, just cynical as shit and a bunch of hacks who don't care how many people they hurt to keep their power.
