The annual Scripps Spelling Bee is going on this week in Washington DC. Were you a good speller in school? How bout now? What words do you have to look up? Definitley? Hmm, thats wrong I think. You will definitely see some mis-spellings in this column every day…mostly because I type this in a hurry. Yesterday, while extolling the joy of reading and writing, I spelled “reading” wrong. Yes, I know how it is spelled, unlike some other words that I have to look up every time. For those of us who grew up with flash cards, and spelling lists and dreaded pop quizzes, wouldn't it have been nice to know that the future would give us spell check? Just like I wish I had all the time back that I spent on learning the multiplication tables…if only we would have known about portable calculators, smart phones and tablets…grade school would have been alot more fun. I bring this up because of an article I saw yesterday regarding Google searches for the correct spelling of words from each state. Some of them you can understand…Maintenance in Texas and Missouri, Chihuahua in Arkansas, and South Carolina, Hallejuah in Indiana and Maryland, Pneumonia in Michaigan and Maine…but then some others were not so easy to understand…Tomorrow in Colorado, Beautiful in California, New York & Minnesota, Angel in North Carolina, Liar in Rhode Island, or Diamond in Kansas….and then there are the weird ones…Diarrhea in New Hampshire, Sauerkraut in Pennsylvania and Giraffe in Louisiana….And then there is Wisconsin….
According to Google the most searched word for spelling purposes in Wisconsin is ….”Wisconsin”…um…
36 year old Jacob Waddell has his 15 minutes of fame. He's the Nashville Predator fan who threw a rotting catfish onto the ice in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Now, I am not advocating fans throwing things on the ice…its dangerous…but you have to admire this guys perserverance. He couldnt flatten the fish enough to fit it in his boot so he stuffed it down his pants. Oh, and did I mention, he brought the dead fish with him on the plane from Nashville to Pittsburgh. It seems that Pittsburgh fish-mongers are checking IDs and will not sell fish to anybody from Tennessee. you can't make this stuff up.
Lets just say the home plate umpires strike zones the last two nights at CitiField have been “interesting”…we all know CB Bucknor is a terrible umpire but Manny Gonzalez was pretty bad last night as well.
A few area teams are still alive in high school softball. Stevens Point, Stevens Point Pacelli, and Marathon will play in sectional title games this week for a trip to state.
Baseball regional winners yesterday included DC Everest, Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Mosinee, Antigo, Rhinelander, Pittsville, Rib Lake, Nekoosa, Athens,Spencer, & Adams-Friendship. Wausau West will face Bayport on Thursday at West.
Elections have consequences…A new White House web page asks Americans which agencies they'd like to get rid of. Two of the choices are the National Park Service and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Now I realize the Trump Administration makes no secret of their disdain for the environment and view natural areas as “just not developed yet” but I would imagine that many Trump voters enjoy the outdoors and who do realize that our National Parks and wild, natural areas are a big part of what makes this country special. Its one area that we don't “need to be made great again”…we already are…unless we let the big money developers, mining companies and others who would destroy the beauty of this country for short-term profit have their way…..
