WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU) — The result of sentencing for Darrell Brooks Jr was never really in doubt, but it became official on Wednesday nonetheless.
The 40-year-old will live out the rest of his days in state prison after Judge Jennifer Dorow handed down six consecutive life sentences, one for each victim, which were read into the record on the second day of sentencing.
Judge Dorow considered Brooks’ lack of remorse during trial along with his criminal history in making her decision.
Brooks was found guilty of the homicide counts along with dozens of other charges including first-degree recklessly endangering safety for driving his SUV into the Waukesha Chrismas Parade route last November. Brooks represented himself during the trial, failing to convince the jury that the act wasn’t intentional.
During Wednesday’s hearing, he spoke for more than an hour, saying he has rekindled his faith in God during his time in jail and had asked Him for forgiveness for the act. Though he also said he felt the trial was not fair.
His statement began calm and collected, but later reverted back to the antics that were seen several times over throughout the trial where he became argumentative and was removed from the courtroom to watch the proceedings via video link.
