WISCONSIN (WTAQ) — It’s the holiday season, and the Wisconsin Christmas Tree industry is going strong despite an increase in price of an extra $5-10 per tree. In fact, Wisconsin ranks in the top five nationally for Christmas tree production; selling about 1.2 million trees annually .
Greg Hann, Promotions Director for the Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association, says that Christmas trees take between 8-10 years to grow. Saplings that are 3-4 years old are planted in April or May; usually standing about 12 inches tall.
Wisconsinites with allergies may want to consider which kind of Christmas tree they purchase.
“The pines are usually bad for allergies,” said Hann. “Anything that’s a scotch pine or a white pine; it seems the sap really does affect you more.”
The most popular types of Christmas trees in Wisconsin are the Balsam Fir and Frasier Fir.
Hann also offered tips on how to properly care for your Christmas tree.
“No matter where you get your tree from, make sure to make a fresh cut when you get home before you put it in water.” said Hann. “It reopens the pores and helps the tree draw water up.”
Additionally, make sure your tree stand can hold one or two gallons of water.
