We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
The New Riders of The Purple Sage were prolific if nothing else. “Gypsy Cowboy” was the second Lp of the year and their 3rd in 15 months. As in most cases of that much material being needed, some is weaker than most.
The best tracks on the Lp are a stright country cover of Kitty Wells ” She’s No Angel” and a John Dawson song called “Death & Destruction” whose melody is copped from Neil Young’s ‘Down By The River”. Well, if youre gonna steal…..
Most of the songs feature Buddy Cage’s biting steel guitar. And Dawson, Dave Torbert & David Nelson do some nice harmonies in spots.
But the material is not strong enough to give this a good review. They have better work coming in the next couple of years.
