MADISON (WSAU-MetroSource) – The top Republican in the Wisconsin Senate says they are ‘close’ to supporting a plan for medical marijuana.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Republicans in the Senate could support a medical marijuana program as long as there are strong regulations. He says he doesn’t want someone with back pain to be able to get a pot prescription in Wisconsin.
The State Senate has been the roadblock for any kind of marijuana legalization in the state in years past. Wisconsin’s Assembly Speaker has indicated he’d support a medical marijuana plan as well, but he too wants strong regulations.
Governor Tony Evers said during his inaugural address that he will continue to push for legalized recreational marijuana, a proposal that has much less support in the Republican-controlled legislature.
